Effercitrate is a treatment for the symptoms of Cystitis and as an initial therapy in mild symptomatic Cystitis prior to an MSU (Midstream Specimen of Urine) result. Effercitrate comes in the form of an effervescent tablet. When fully dissolved in water, the solution contains Potassium citrate and Citric acid.
What is potassium citrate used for?
Potassium citrate is used to treat a kidney stone condition called renal tubular acidosis. It is also used to prevent kidney stones that may occur with gout. Potassium citrate is a urinary alkalinizer. It works by making the urine more alkaline (less acid).
What happens if you take too many cystitis sachets?
Recommended doses of potassium citrate are unlikely to cause any side-effects other than making you want to pass a little more urine than normal, and maybe a mild stomach upset. If either of these becomes troublesome, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.
What is the point of effervescent tablets?
Effervescent tablets are designed to release carbon dioxide upon contact with water, promoting their disintegration. Within a couple of minutes the tablets completely dissolve and the drug becomes available in solution.
Can potassium citrate damage kidneys?
Potassium citrate (Urocit-K) can cause high levels of potassium in your body. Chronic kidney failure, heart failure, certain medications, and the use of potassium-based salt substitutes raise your risk of this happening. High potassium can cause heart problems, such as a heart attack.
When is the best time to take potassium citrate?
It is best to take this medicine with a meal or bedtime snack, or within 30 minutes after meals. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole. Do not break, crush, chew, or suck it. Doing so, may cause irritation in the mouth or throat.
Does potassium make you urinate a lot?
A potassium level that is too high or too low can be serious. Abnormal levels may cause symptoms such as muscle cramps or weakness, nausea, diarrhea, or frequent urination.
Why won’t my cystitis go away?
