In 1996, Congress acted again to establish the Corporation for the Promotion of Rifle Practice and Firearm Safety that now governs the CMP.
Will CMP run out of garands?
The CMP considers any item containing an M1 Garand receiver with a serial number to be an M1 Garand and will deduct from the eight M1 Garand rifle limit per year. Our rifle inventory is limited at this time due to our log of backorders and the 7 week CMP shutdown due to COVID-19.
Can anyone buy from CMP?
There are currently over 1,800 affiliated organizations. All of our shooting events are accessible to anyone regardless of their affiliation or club membership, but to purchase anything from the CMP, an individual must show proof of belonging to an affiliated club or organization.

What does it take to become a marksman?
Soldiers can earn three different proficiencies in marksmanship: Marksman, which requires a Soldier to shoot 23 out of 40 targets. Sharpshooter, which requires a Soldier to shoot 30 out of 40 targets. Expert, which requires Soldiers to shoot 36 or more out of the 40 available targets.
Will the CMP get more 1911s?
At present time, CMP is unsure of future receiving future allotments. All 1911 requests must be made through the mail – no 1911s will be available in CMP stores, and no in-store or drop-off orders will be accepted. Each pistol is inspected and test fired by the CMP before it is shipped.
