What is oxLDL?
What is oxLDL?
Oxidized LDL (oxLDL) represents a variety of modification of both lipid and apolipoprotein B (apoB) components by lipid peroxidation. This promotes atherosclerosis through inflammatory and immunologic mechanisms that lead to the formation of macrophage foam cells.
What is the role of oxidized LDL?
Oxidized LDLs are cytotoxic to vascular cells [47, 48] and promote their apoptosis [49, 50] with ensuing release in the subendothelial space of lipids and lysosomal enzymes, enhancing the progression of the atherosclerotic plaque [47] and the production of the necrotic core.
What are oxidized lipoproteins?
Abstract. Plasma lipoproteins contain variable amounts of lipid oxidation products (LOP), which are known to impair normal physiological functions and stimulate atherosclerotic processes.
What causes high OxLDL?
OxLDL levels may be elevated in patients with kidney disease and polycystic ovary syndrome. OxLDL levels should also be interpreted with caution in patients with known autoimmune disorders and those with diseases associated with oxidative stress, such as Alzheimer’s disease.
How do you lower OxLDL?
There are things that you can do to stop the damage from oxidized LDL.
- Focus on eating healthy fats.
- Eat saturated fats in moderation.
- Include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet.
- Pay attention to nutrition labels, and stay away from hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated foods.
How do you reduce OxLDL?
What causes oxidized LDL cholesterol?
Foods that cause oxidized cholesterol that should be limited or avoided include: Trans fats: Foods that are higher in trans fats include pastries, deep-fried foods, potato chips, and any food cooked with lard. Sugary foods: Refined sugars have been linked to higher levels of oxidized cholesterol.
What is the difference between LDL and oxidized LDL?
Oxidized LDL is LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol) that has been modified by oxidation. Oxidized LDL triggers inflammation leading to the formation of plaque in the arteries, also known as atherosclerosis.

What foods eliminate oxidized cholesterol?
What foods cause oxidation of cholesterol?
Food processing, especially heat treatment and drying, induces cholesterol oxidation in foods including dairy products, eggs, meat, and fish. Oxidized cholesterol is also present in bakery products, since the major ingredients, eggs and butter, contain large amounts of oxidized cholesterol.
