What is kleefstra syndrome?
What is kleefstra syndrome?
Kleefstra syndrome is a rare genetic condition that affects development and involves many body systems. People with Kleefstra syndrome usually have distinct facial features, developmental delay, intellectual disability, low muscle tone (hypotonia), and communication difficulties.
What is aicardi syndrome?
People with Aicardi syndrome have absent or underdeveloped tissue connecting the left and right halves of the brain (agenesis or dysgenesis of the corpus callosum ). They have seizures beginning in infancy (infantile spasms), which tend to progress to recurrent seizures (epilepsy) that can be difficult to treat.
What is Generalised hypotonia?
Generalized neonatal hypotonia implies a pathologically decreased postural tone involving at least the extremities, trunk and neck occurring during the first month of life.
Can Kleefstra syndrome be cured?
Researchers at the RIKEN Cluster for Pioneering Research (CPR) in Japan report that Kleefstra syndrome, a genetic disorder that leads to intellectual disability, can be reversed after birth in a mouse model of the disease.
What causes Kleefstra?
Kleefstra syndrome is caused by the loss of the EHMT1 gene or by mutations that disable its function. The EHMT1 gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called euchromatic histone methyltransferase 1. Histone methyltransferases are enzymes that modify proteins called histones .
Are there any treatments for Aicardi?
There is no cure for Aicardi syndrome nor is there a standard course of treatment. Treatment generally involves medical management of seizures and programs to help parents and children cope with developmental delays.
Can hypotonia be cured?
Hypotonia is a lifelong condition that can get better with treatment. Most babies who have a hypotonia diagnosis show great improvement in their muscle tone as they get older. If your child receives an underlying genetic condition diagnosis, there’s a chance that symptoms of hypotonia could worsen over time.
What does hypotonia look like?
Infants with hypotonia have a floppy quality or “rag doll” appearance because their arms and legs hang by their sides and they have little or no head control. Other symptoms of hypotonia include problems with mobility and posture, breathing and speech difficulties, ligament and joint laxity, and poor reflexes.
