Is bone marrow biopsy very painful?
With local anesthesia, bone marrow aspiration, in particular, can cause brief, but sharp, pain. Many people choose to also have light sedation for additional pain relief. If you’re anxious about pain, you may be given an IV medication so that you’re either completely or partially sedated during the bone marrow exam.

Can you walk after a bone marrow biopsy?
The biopsy site may feel sore for several days. You may have a bruise on the site. It can help to walk, take pain medicine, and put ice packs on the site. You will probably be able to return to work and your usual activities the day after the procedure.
How long does it take to recover from bone marrow biopsy?
The biopsy is performed with a slightly bigger needle that is used compared to normal blood tests. This larger needle is needed to enter the bone at the back of the hip. After the biopsy the hole in the bone will immediately begin to heal and it is expected complete healing will have occurred within 1 to 2 weeks.
What if bone marrow test is positive?
Abnormal results may be due to cancer, infection, or another bone marrow disease. Your doctor may need to order more tests to confirm a diagnosis. And they will discuss the results and treatment options if needed and plan your next steps during the follow-up appointment.
What diseases can a bone marrow biopsy detect?
The pathologist can check your bone marrow for any of the following:
- Unexplained anemia (lack of red blood cells)
- Abnormal numbers of blood cells (red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets)
- Lack of iron (iron deficiency)
- Cancers of the blood-forming tissue (leukemia or lymphoma)
Is leukemia a death sentence?
The 5-year relative survival rate for all types of leukemia is 65 percent, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) . Not considering age, new leukemia rates haven’t changed much since 2019. Death rates have fallen by almost 2 percent every year since 2009.
