Is pfSense hardware or software firewall?

Hardware. Unlike most common commercial firewalls offerings, the pfSense project is just the software portion of the firewall. This means you get to tailor the hardware you choose to meet your environment’s specific needs.

Is 8gb RAM enough for pfSense?

Snort and Suricata are pfSense packages for network intrusion detection. Depending on their configuration, they can require a significant amount of RAM. 1 GB should be considered a minimum but some configurations may need 2 GB or more, not counting RAM used by the operating system, firewall states, and other packages.

Is there anything better than pfSense?

OPNsense has a nicer user interface and seems to be implementing new features faster than pfSense. pfSense has been around for longer, so the community is bigger, and there’s more documentation online. IPFire has a less mature user interface, so we don’t recommend it unless you already know it.
