Like any good story, the Core Story answers the big questions: what, why, how, who and when. It contains key ideas that are found to help people see why early childhood development is so important, and to support what needs to be done.

StoryCorps is an American non-profit organization whose mission is to record, preserve, and share the stories of Americans from all backgrounds and beliefs. StoryCorps grew out of Sound Portraits Productions as a project founded in 2003 by radio producer David Isay.

We want everyone to have the opportunity to record, preserve, and share their personal histories with their loved ones, and to become a part of our archive at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.
Who funds StoryCorps?
StoryCorps is an independently funded 501(c)(3) organization. We rely on support from institutions, corporations and individuals to advance our mission.
What makes a good story?
A story needs conflict and resolution; tension and release; mystery and revelation. There should be losses and gains, setbacks and comebacks, peaks and troughs. And, above all, a story should be about people: their dreams and desires; loves and hates; problems and passions.

What is a key message example?
Examples include “We were the first to…”, “We’re the largest…”, “We invented the…”, “We’re the only ones to…”, “We’re the safest…”, etc. If your “why” is particularly interesting or inspirational, include it as a key message.
