Many observatories around the world are at least partially accessible to the public, with some, such as McDonald Observatory in West Texas, even allowing regular public access to some of their research telescopes.

Tours of the Observatory, either guided or unguided, are inappropriate for guests with limited mobility. Visitors should take these factors into consideration before touring the Observatory. Weather conditions in the mountains can vary greatly and change suddenly.

The tour of the Subaru Telescope allows visitors to see up-close one of the world’s most powerful astronomical telescopes. Our summit guide will meet the scheduled visitors outside of the telescope enclosure (i.e., the dome) at a pre-appointed time and will escort them inside of the enclosure. No walk-ins are accepted.

It can be viewed by the public during the hours Griffith Park is open (5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.).
Can you look through telescope at McDonald Observatory?
Will we see live views from the research telescopes? No. Astronomers at McDonald use spectroscopy for their reserach. This involves splitting the light of an astronomical object into its component colors and carefully analyzing that spectrum.
Can you go to Mauna Kea on your own?
Yes, but not with any car and only during daylight hours. On the road from the visitor center to the summit only 4WD vehicles are allowed, and the summit is off-limits from half and hour after sunset. Read more about driving to the summit here.
Can you go to Mauna Kea Observatory?
The Onizuka Center for International Astronomy Visitor Information Station (VIS) on Maunakea is open every day of the year from 11:30 am to 7pm at the 9,200 foot (2,804 meter) level. They provide health, safety, and other information about Maunakea.
