Before being purchased by Fortress Mountain Holdings Ltd., the area had previously been owned by Banff Rail Company, as well as Resorts of the Canadian Rockies (RCR). Aspen Skiing Co. owned the resort in the 1970s and 80s. In early December 2009, scenes from the film Inception were shot there.
Why did Fortress Mountain ski close?
In 2004, the resort closed due to falling revenue. A new company, Banff Rail Co., bought it and reopened for a short time in 2006 but the province ordered it to stop selling passes until an unsafe bridge was fixed. The province revoked the company’s lease in 2007.
