Juanita’s discovery in 1995 captured the world’s attention, making headlines across the Americas, but also in Europe and Asia. The first female mummy to be discovered in the Andes, her body was also well preserved. Unfortunately, sun exposure desiccated the Ice Maiden’s face before Reinhard and Zárate found her.
How was Juanita preserved?
Reinhard was able to recover the mummy. The fact that ice preserved the body makes Juanita a substantial scientific find. All other high-altitude Inca mummies have been completely desiccated—freeze-dried in a way—much like mummies found elsewhere in the world.
What artifacts were found with the Ice Maiden?
Pottery shards, bones from llamas and corn kernels surrounded her. The mummy was from a teenage girl, probably between 12 and 14 years old. Reinhard believed that Inca priests had sacrificed her, probably as part of a ritual to the gods they believed were part of the mountain.

For 19 years after her discovery, she was kept mainly at a scientific institute in Novosibirsk, but in September 2012, the mummy was returned to the Altai, where she is kept in a special mausoleum at the Republican National Museum in the capital Gorno-Altaysk.
