What is the company authentication code?
The authentication code is a 6 digit alphanumeric code issued by us to each company. The code is used to authorise information filed online and is the equivalent of a company officer’s signature.
Do companies change authentication code?
Anyone who knows your code can change your company’s details online. If you forget your code, do not wait until you’re due to file to request a new code. It can take up to 5 days to arrive, or longer during busy periods. Just like your bank card PIN, you can change your authentication code to something more memorable.

To do this:
- Register for Companies House WebFiling, or log in if you are already registered.
- Click the ‘Request an authentication code’ link.
- Select where your company was formed and enter the company number – then click ‘Continue’
- Select ‘Request code’
- You’ll receive your code by post.

A WebFiling authentication code is a unique digital password. It comprises six alphanumeric characters. It is basically the electronic equivalent of a director’s signature. Companies House will provide one of these codes when you form a new limited company.

Yes, initially you will receive a different code for each company but you can then change the codes so that they are all the same. Sign into WebFiling and select ‘Company authentication’ to change the company Authentication Code. This code can be the same code for all companies that you submit information on.

- A message says “Account Details Unavailable.” Tap Get Verification Code.

Does a company authentication code expire?
If your authentication code has expired or it’s invalid, you will not be able to submit any changes online through your account. You will see an error message when this happens, and will need to request a new code from Companies House: Log in (or register if new to the service) to Companies House Webfiling service.
How do I remove a SIC code from Companies House?
All you need to do is file a confirmation statement. This is the annual report that provides Companies House with a general snapshot of your company’s general, non-financial, situation. The confirmation statement will allow you to add and remove SIC codes. It’s up to you when you do this.
How do I generate a code from my authentication app?
Fire up your authentication app, choose to add a new login there, and scan the code by pointing your phone at it, or by using the browser extension’s method for it. Type in the six-digit code that’s automatically generated on your device into the Facebook prompt, and then you’re good to go.
