What is R22a?
What is R22a?
R-22a is a hydrocarbon refrigerant blend with primary components including flammable substances such as propane and butane. In some cases, it may also contain small amounts of other hydrocarbons or a pine-scented odorant. This refrigerant is a highly flammable, colorless gas that is heavier than air.
Is R22 and 22a the same?
Named as R22a, or just 22a, gas, which is an alternative to the conventional R22, poses a safety risk to users of the appliance and to professional technicians as it is a propane refrigerant, ie it can catch fire or explode.
Is R22a compatible with R22?
Compatible with most common refrigeration materials and lubricants including R22, metal components, mineral and synthetic (Ester and PAG) lubricants, seals, gaskets, hoses, compressors, and O-rings. 22a can replace R22 refrigerant directly without the modification of the equipment.
Is 12a flammable?
Because of its high flammability, it is unacceptable to replace R-12 with HC-12a in the United States. Thus its use in public transport vehicles is illegal in the United States since 1990.
What is Red Tek 22a?
RED TEK 22a, a hydrocarbon-based refrigerant, is designed as a direct replacement and retrofit refrigerant option for replacing R22 substitutes in commercial air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
Is R290 refrigerant safe?
The EPA recommends foodservice businesses choose R290 (also known as hydrocarbon or HC) refrigerant, which is natural, non-toxic, and free of ozone-depleting properties.
What is the replacement Freon for R22?
The best replacement for R-22 Freon is usually R-407c. It has a very low loss in capacity (0 – 5%) relative to R-22 and is less expensive than many other R-22 replacement refrigerants. If a system has R22 in it already you cannot use a replacement refrigerant to simply add to the R22.
Can you use R290 in a R22 system?
Because R290 has similar saturated pressure-temperature characteristics and volumetric refrigerating capacity as R22, is miscible with the oils typically used in R22 compressors, is relatively cheap and is reported to yield favourable efficiency, it is often deemed as a desirable option to use in existing R22 systems.
What is R12a?
R12a is a “drop in” replacement for R12, but IS NOT the same. It is a mix if different refrigerants (sometimes propane, hence the flammable concern) that will work in a system designed for R12.
Can I use R12a instead of 134a?
The Duracool product is not R12, but R12a or R129 as listed in their FAQ. FAQ states it’s a drop-in replacement for R134a. As far as constructive comments for refilling your system, the FAQ has a pretty good procedure listed, due to the weight differences between the two products.
Is RED TEK 22a compatible with R134a?
RED TEK® hydrocarbon refrigerants are used in a wide range of automotive, commercial, and industrial air conditioning and refrigeration systems….
REFRIGERANT | LUBRICANT |
---|---|
RED TEK® 22a | MO, POE, PAG or AB |
RED TEK® 502a | MO, POE, PAG or AB |
R12 | MO |

Is R22 toxic?
It’s important for you to understand what the R22 is: a highly toxic and flammable refrigerant used in most HVAC systems.
