What is Goma known for?
Goma lies only 13–18 km (8.1–11.2 mi) south of the active Nyiragongo Volcano. The recent history of Goma has been dominated by the volcano and the Rwandan genocide of 1994, which in turn fuelled the First and Second Congo Wars.

They are a contingent of the Bantu tribe who are more commonly found in Tanzania and present-day Democratic Republic of Congo who migrated from the western shore of the Lake Tanganyika in Democratic Republic of Congo with origins from Sudan.

The town is worth a visit. While Goma is reasonably safe, any visits outside of Goma should be researched to understand the state of the fighting that persists in the North Kivu province. In particular any trips out of the city should be planned with caution.

On the evening of 22nd May 2021, Africa’s most active volcano and one of the most dangerous in the world erupted. The lava flow from the Nyiragongo volcano flowed to the northeast of the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

500,000 people. Three villages and one neighborhood in the city of Goma were destroyed by the lava on the DRC side. Thirteen civilians lost their lives during the night of 22 May due to evacuation-related incidents (mostly vehicle crashes).
