Definition: abnormal accumulation of milk within the mammary gland alveoli and ducts due to failure of ejection (letdown) from the gland; may be associated with nipple anatomic abnormalities.
What to do if you think you have mastitis?
Do
- soak a cloth in warm water and place it on your breast to help relieve the pain – a warm shower or bath may also help.
- rest and drink lots of fluids.
- take paracetamol or ibuprofen to reduce any pain or fever.
- if you are breastfeeding, continue to breastfeed.
- start feeds with the sore breast first.
What causes a dog’s breast to swell?
Mastitis is a condition in which the mammary glands become inflamed, usually due to milk accumulation or bacterial infection. An evident sign of mastitis is when a dog has swollen breasts, and it may also include noticeable inflammation.
How can I treat mastitis in my dog at home?
If the infection is mild, early treatment at home will help reduce pain. For example, you can apply warm compresses to the mammary glands. For warm compresses, you can use cabbage leaves or towels. When your dog lactates, the teats flush out bacteria with the milk.

Galactopoiesis is the maintenance of lactation once lactation has been established. Two key interrelated components contribute to the maintenance of lactation, galactopoietic hormones and removal of accumulated milk.
What does mastitis look like?
With mastitis, the infected milk duct causes the breast to swell. Your breast may look red and feel tender or warm. Many women with mastitis feel like they have the flu, including achiness, chills, and a fever of 101 F or higher. You may also have discharge from your nipple or feel a hard lump in your breast.
Can mastitis go away on its own?
The infection should clear up within 10 days but may last as long as three weeks. Mastitis sometimes goes away without medical treatment. To reduce pain and inflammation, you can: Apply warm, moist compresses to the affected breast every few hours or take a warm shower.

Female dogs are most likely to be affected by swollen nipples due to the nature of their mammary gland. Extra precautions must be taken if swollen nipples are observed in dogs. Swollen nipples may indicate an infection or a life-threatening medical condition such as cancer.
How do I know if my dog has mastitis?
Signs of Mastitis
- Depression or lethargy.
- Decreased appetite.
- Fever (temperature over 102.5°F)
- Dehydration.
- Not wanting to nurse the puppies or seeming uncomfortable when nursing.
- Failure of the puppies to thrive.
- Hot, firm, swollen and painful breast tissue (mammary glands)
What does dog mastitis look like?
The affected mammary gland may appear dark purple or black in color, as the tissues begin to die off due to overwhelming infection and decreased blood supply. Affected dogs may become lethargic, develop a fever, refuse to eat, or begin vomiting, as the infection enters the bloodstream and they develop signs of sepsis.
What is Lactogenesis and Galactopoiesis?
During the lactation cycle, there is further growth of the breast (mammogenesis), the initiation of milk synthesis and secretion (lactogenesis 1 and lactogenesis 2), lactation (galactopoiesis), regression of the breast during and after weaning (involution), and relative quiescence during subsequent menstrual cycles.
