What is Data Domain Encryption?
What is Data Domain Encryption?
DD Encryption provides inline encryption. As data is ingested, the stream is deduplicated, compressed, and encrypted using an encryption key before it is written to the RAID group. DD Encryption uses RSA BSAFE libraries, which are validated according to the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2.
How does Data Domain replication work?
Data Domain replication involves copying data from one DD to another. A replication pair is called a “context” in the DD GUI. The primary purpose of DD replication is disaster recovery, although archiving data for longer periods than is desired to have onsite is also a function.
What is Data Domain Retention Lock?
Retention lock is functionality which is used on Data Domain Restorers (DDRs) to prevent modification or deletion of certain sets of files for a predetermined period. That is, retention locked files are read-only until their retention period expires.
How does Data Domain deduplication work?
Data Domain systems perform deduplication inline, as the backup stream comes into the system and only stores unique elements on disk. Unlike post-process deduplication, they do not have to store data on disk first and then deduplicate it afterwards as a separate process.
What is MTree in Data Domain?
DataDomain MTree Dell EMC defines an MTree as logical partitions of the file system and they are identified by a unique name. MTrees are used to create (protocols can be mixed, except VTL): DD Boost storage units.
How do you enter SE mode in Data Domain?
Entering Data Domain bash (root access)
- sy sh se. This provides the serial number of your Data Domain. se means ‘systems engineer’
- priv set se. This will provide a prompt to enter your DD’s bash password. Your password is your DD’s serial number provided in step #1. Copy it here and hit enter.
- shell-escape.
What is Data Domain used for?
Data Domain provides the capability to consolidate both backup and archive data on the same infrastructure allowing greater consolidation by eliminating silos of backup and archive storage and associated overhead.
What is the difference between Avamar and Data Domain?
Avamar software provides source-based deduplication, reducing data at the server before the data is moved to the backup target. That is different than the Dell EMC Data Domain platform that performs target-based deduplication at the disk backup appliance.
Is Data Domain immutable?
With Data Domain Automatic Retention Lock feature, data can be stored in an immutable manner for the duration defined by the value set in the Automatic retention period section. There is no granular control to specify different retention periods to data stored within the MTree.
What is a Data Domain MTree?
What is DDBoost used for?
EMC Data Domain Boost software, also known as DD Boost, is designed to offload part of the Data Domain deduplication process to a backup server or application client. That prevents the Data Domain disk array from having to carry the full burden of the dedupe workload.
What is the difference between deduplication and compression?
Deduplication removes redundant data blocks, whereas compression removes additional redundant data within each data block. These techniques work together to reduce the amount of space required to store the data.
