What are keloids? When skin is injured, fibrous tissue called scar tissue forms over the wound to repair and protect the injury. In some cases, extra scar tissue grows, forming smooth, hard growths called keloids. Keloids can be much larger than the original wound.
What is a raised scar called?
A keloid is usually larger than the original wound. A scar that stays inside the bounds of the original wound is a hypertrophic scar. A keloid scar is a thick raised scar. It can occur wherever you have a skin injury but usually forms on earlobes, shoulders, cheeks or the chest.
How do I get rid of scar tissue in my balls?
Treatments include the following:
- Corticosteroid shots. The medicine in these shots helps shrink the scar.
- Freezing the scar. Called cryotherapy, this can be used to reduce the hardness and size of the keloid.
- Wearing silicone sheets or gel over the scar.
- Laser therapy.
- Surgical removal.
- Pressure treatment.
How do you flatten raised scars?
Cryotherapy: Cryotherapy uses extreme cold (liquid nitrogen) to freeze and slowly destroy scar tissue, which helps flatten the raised tissue. This treatment may be combined with the other injection treatment options to further reduce the scar.
Why is my scar lumpy?
When the skin is wounded, the tissues break, which causes a protein called collagen to be released. Collagen builds up where the tissue is damaged, helping to heal and strengthen the wound. New collagen continues forming for several months and the blood supply increases, causing the scar to become raised and lumpy.
Can scar tissue cause a lump?
A scar is fibrous tissue made of collagen that replaces the injured skin. A lump of scar tissue forms in the hole left after breast tissue is removed. If scar tissue forms around a stitch from surgery it’s called a suture granuloma and also feels like a lump.
Can scar tissue go away?
While some scar tissue will never go away, oftentimes, if treated properly, the injured tissue can be remolded to resemble normal, healthy tissue. This can reduce any pain and restore normal tissue behavior in any area of the body, even pelvic muscles following the birth of a baby.
Why is my scar bulging?
This is called a hypertrophic scar. Sometimes scar tissue grows over the boundaries of the original wound, creating a puffy, round protrusion called a keloid. Hypertrophic scars and keloids may be itchy, tender, or painful.
