A diuresis renal scan is performed to assess if your kidneys have an obstruction and to study the entire renal excretory system. For a diuresis renal scan, an IV will be started in a vein in your arm. You will receive fluid through the IV of normal saline, which is sterile water mixed with a very small amount of salt.

A MAG 3 Lasix renal scan (Lasix scan) is provides images of the kidneys to look for kidney function, size, shape, position and blockage of urinary flow. There are no dietary or activity restrictions before or after the renal scan. A renal scan may take up to two hours to complete.

What is the prep for a renal scan?
The primary requirement is to drink at least 24 ounces of a clear liquid an hour or more before the procedure. This is because a kidney ultrasound is also a bladder ultrasound and your physician will want images of your bladder both before and after you empty it. There is no fasting requirement for a renal ultrasound.
