Is a differential breather necessary?
Is a differential breather necessary?
Why are Diff Breathers important? Extended diff breathers are extremely important insurance for your 4WD if you drive through water. In essence, when you go through a puddle that is near or above diff height, you are dunking a hot differential into cold water.
How does a rear differential breather work?
As the air in your diff housings heats up, it expands, and pressurises the diff. The breather lets it release this pressure out into the atmosphere, instead of out via your axle seals.
What is the purpose of a differential breather?
A differential / axle breather serves the important purpose on a 4WD vehicle of venting the air pressure in your drivetrain assemblies such as differentials, gearbox and transfer case.
Why does a differential need a vent?
As the axle increases in temperature, the air pressure inside the axle likewise increases. To accommodate the increase in air pressure resulting from this heat, manufacturers add a vent tube to the top of the axle as means of releasing this pressurized air to the atmosphere.
What is the purpose of a differential vent?
What do breathers do?
The gases are then vented off to reduce the pressure. On older cars this simply meant having a breather pipe venting to atmosphere, but on all modern cars the breather pipe actually vents back to the engine’s inlet. This helps reduce emissions and prevents the car from dropping an oily residue directly onto the road.
What is a breather kit?
The ARB Differential Breather Kit allows excess ventilation pressure to escape in your vehicle’s drivetrain assemblies such as the differentials, transmissions, and transfer cases. At times these assemblies can heat up allowing the air inside to expand which increases pressure.
What is a transmission breather?
Breather allows the transmission to breathe air when the air inside transmission expands or contracts due to heating and cooling of lubricating oil during vehicle running. Breather allows the hot air to escape and cool air to enter into the transmission to prevent overheating issue.
