Typically, after the first contraceptive patch is applied, you must wait seven days before it can be fully protective against pregnancy. In the meantime, use a backup method, such as a condom. The patch is 99% effective if it’s used exactly as indicated; in reality, it’s around 91% effective.
Can I start the patch before my period?
On Day 22, remove the patch and wait 7 days before applying a new patch. Your menstrual period should start during your patch-free week. Your patch-free week should not be longer than 7 days. If the patch is off for more than 7 days in a row and you have sex during this time, you could become pregnant.
What if my patch falls off?
If the patch does fall off, what you need to do depends on how long it has been off. If it’s been off for less than 48 hours: put a new patch on (don’t try to hold the old patch in place with a plaster or bandage) change it on your normal change day.
Can I take my patch off a day early?
Take your patch off as soon as you can. Your patch change day and patch cycle will stay the same — put on your next patch and start your next patch cycle the same day you normally would. You don’t need backup birth control or emergency contraception.

Can I shower with the patch on?
It’s OK to do regular activities like swimming and exercise while wearing the patch. It can also get wet in the shower or in the bath.
Is it normal to bleed while on the patch?
During the first few months while your body is adjusting to the contraceptive patch, you may have some vaginal bleeding in addition to the usual bleeding during your patch-free week. This is not serious but can be a nuisance. It may vary from spotting to a heavier loss like a light period. Do not stop using your patch.
Does Xulane make you gain weight?
Xulane can sometimes cause weight gain. You may notice breast growth as part of this gained weight. Xulane can also cause your body to retain more fluid, which may make your breast tissue more swollen.
