How is subwoofer port volume calculated?
How is subwoofer port volume calculated?
The port area is in square inches, meaning it takes height times width to calculate total area. A port 4 inches high by 4 inches wide would calculate as 4 x 4= 16 in2. In our example box, we have an inside height of 14.5 inches.
How big should a port be in a sub box?
the narrower you go the more it will act like a big sealed box. and for the length, go from 18 to 23 inches on up. the longer the lower.
How do you calculate the volume of a ported box?
HOW TO CALCULATE BOX VOLUME
- Subtract material thickness from the external measurements:
- Multiply length, width, and height in inches:
- Convert the volume from cubic inches to cubic feet:
- First, subtract the ¾” wood thickness: Internal dimensions = 14.5 in.
- Calculate internal volume in cubic inches: 14.5 in.
Can a subwoofer port be too big?
Remember, there is such a thing as too big. As the size of the enclosure increases, the mechanical limits of the woofer will be easier to reach. If the box is too small (by a reasonable amount) add power. It will help the driver overcome the lack of volume present to still belt out that bass!
What should my port area be?
To keep port velocities right around 30 m/sec you can multiply the square root of the power density by . 605 and that will give you how many sq in per cubic foot of box volume you need. So in my example of a 500 watts per cube enclosure that means you need 13.5 sq in per cube.
Can a port be too big?
It’s too big when it doesn’t fit in your box. You can have it outside the box. It is too big when it doesn’t fit in your room.
What happens if a port is too small?
If the port is too small in diameter you can get a chuffing sound from the air flow turbulance in and out of the port. That is why ports sometimes have beveled edges to reduce that effect. If you start beveling a short 3″ port it changes the effective diameter and length.
Is Port volume included in box volume?
No. You have to subtract it from the volume. The program can’t know if the port is inside or outside of the box or how much volume the port takes up, it depends on the wall size too (made out of MDF etc.).
What happens if a port is too big?
With too big of a port, you will get distortion and not enough bass sound. With a shorter port, you will get distorted high-frequency sound.
Do I need to double port for 2 subs?
You need two times port area, not two times the diameter. 2 inches diameter port area = 3.1415926535897932384626433832795 square inches.
