How do you make a black soldier fly larvae bin?

The idea behind a black soldier fly bin is simple: Fill a bin with kitchen waste, wait for black soldier flies to find the cache, and then you’ll eventually have grubs. You can also purchase live larvae, but I have yet to have a problem attracting bugs to my bin that deposit their eggs.

Are NutriGrubs and Bsfl the same thing?

Do I need to dust Bsfl with calcium?

They are already high in calcium so you do not need to dust the larvae. You would dust all your other feeders though. You do want to make sure your offering more then just the BSF in larvae or fly state though.

How long does it take for Bsfl to turn into flies?

It takes 3 to 4 weeks for the adults to emerge from their puparia depending upon the temperature of the environment around your recycler (see The Effect of Temperature on Emergence of Black Soldier Flies). So it is really a matter of how much of a hurry one is to get the system going.

BSFL grow very fast and have a high turnover rate for the feed. It takes only two weeks in optimal conditions to get full-size larvae for harvesting. The time needed depends on temperature and the quality of the feed.
