Pole To Paris is here to motivate you.
Follow us, but also find a way to engage with climate change yourself. Across the board there are things you can do everyday to raise the consciousness in society of this issue. Follow our campaigns from now until December 2015 to find out how you can get involved.
The story of the Southern Cycle starts at 77 ˚ South on the McMurdo Ice Shelf.
The Northern Run begins in Tromso, Norway at 69 ˚ North.
Both of these locations are in the polar regions.
It is these regions that the “Pole” title is referring to.
As we were unable to acquire funding to support travel by ship this was impossible.
On the Southern Cycle flights will need to be taken to cross certain sea areas, while ferry
services will be used to cross others.
We appreciate that flying produces a large carbon footprint, but we were provided with
no other alternatives.
We have offset all our carbon emissions via our collaboration with myclimate.org
You the people dictate this.
All the tools we need are readily available to begin a transition to a carbon neutral future.
We need to put all our energy into ensuring that a successful deal is secured in Paris.
A deal will be the starting point from which we can begin to address the climate crisis.
Your voice is everything in this. Pole To Paris is here to encourage you to speak up.
The actual cycling begins in Australia, then continues to Indonesia, Malaysia,
Thailand, Bangladesh, China, Central Asia and into Europe.
A Surly Long Haul Trucker is the bike of choice for the Southern Cycle.
In addition a donation was received from our sponsors.
cycling touring. Dan aims to cycle the vast majority of the distance but is restricted by
sea crossings and the timeframe available ahead of COP21.
At the COP21 conference in Paris later this year we have a chance to start down a new path – a path that will allow the world to avert the most disastrous impacts of climate change. It is essential that all of us raise our voices so that our leaders unmistakably hear our call for action.
This is why Pole to Paris exists.
Although our goal is positive climate action, our campaign does require that on a few occasions we fly short distances – a carbon intensive mode of transport.
When the Pole to Paris project was envisaged this was not part of the plan. However, it has become obvious throughout the planning process that there is simply no other affordable way to cross the seas.
To overcome this logistical reality we have partnered with myclimate, who will offset all of the carbon emitted from the few flights that we take throughout the Pole to Paris project. For more information on the carbon offset, and to see more of their fantastic work, visit myclimate at www.myclimate.org.
This year the world needs to be captivated by the climate change debate and engage with it as never before. The Pole to Paris journey is here to help facilitate this. We all know the path that we must travel to avoid the worst effects of climate change; now it’s up to us to raise our voices so that they cannot be missed in Paris.
The future starts now.
