With the latest generation cards, they will only crossfire with other cards in their sub series. For example, GPU in the same series can be crossfired with each other. So a 5800 series GPU (e.g. a 5830) can run together with another 5800 series GPU (e.g. 5870).

YES. You can SLI those 2 different GPU brand models. As long as the base specs of the cards match, like e.g. CUDA Cores, they will work in SLI mode.

The difference between brands of the same GPU is simply the company that put the GPU chip onto their PCB and slap their cooler on. The only compatibility issue I can see are simply physical dimension differences between each company’s coolers.

I would say brand matters, but its not like you can choose a “wrong” brand. Generally the only things that change brand to brand are warranty, build quality, cooling (and noise), and OCs. I highly recommend the MSI Gaming, its a great card. Runs cool, quiet, and OCs well.
Does brand really matter for GPU?
Not much as long as they are reputable brands like ASUS Gigabyte MSI etc… Some will give you better thermal performance which may mean a higher overclock. However if you want to overclock, buy the higher end cards in the range.
