Don’t mix species Yet, those same organisms can be deadly to different species of tortoises. It’s best not to mix two or more tortoise species together, even if you believe yours are all parasite and dangerous organism-free.
Do tortoises get along with other tortoises?
Under the right circumstances, tortoises can be kept in pairs. However, it’s better to have a single tortoise rather than many. Unlike most other animals, tortoises don’t live in groups out in the wild. They’re solitary creatures that only come together to mate.
Can you have 2 tortoises together?
IF you decide you want more than 1 tortoise, please avoid keeping 2 males together, or 1 male and 1 female. Either 3 females (with LOTS of space) or 1 male and 3+ females might work… but even then, you may find yourself needing a degree in tortoise diplomatics!
Can Russian and sulcata tortoises live together?
Obviously sulcata or Russian cannot be kept with any other species (or together). Redfoot and yellowfoot habitat overlap in the wild. Elongated have exactly the same habitat requirements as redfoot and yellowfoot in the wild and therefore in captivity.
Can sulcata and desert tortoise live?
We recommend that you do not share the yard with our desert tortoise or any other species. If the area is not large enough, expect the sulcata to ram walls and knock over items, small trees and shrubs.
Can Horsfield and Hermann tortoises live together?
A horsfield and a hermanns will fight most likely to the death. Hermanns will nip but horsfields will bite and tear and not at the tough legs, but at the head and neck area. A horsfields skin is very very tough and can take a lot more than hermanns can.
Do tortoises like being touched?
In the proper care, however, most tortoises appear to enjoy being touched by their caretakers. In some cases, they extend their necks out while being touched or massaged – a sign that the animal wants to be rubbed some more.
Can sulcata and leopard tortoise together?
Yes Leopards and Sulcatas can and will cross breed. They also aren’t found together in the wild (see the range map in Holger Vetter’s book Leopard and African Spurred Tortoise). That being said you should be fine as long as you don’t add a male Sulcata to the group.
