Are dosimetry badges required?
Are dosimetry badges required?
All users of medical x-ray equipment (C-arms, fluoro units, therapy units) must wear badges. Those using larger quantities of radioactive materials will also be provided badges.
What is the purpose of the dosimeter badge?
What does the dosimeter do? A radiation dosimeter or badge does not provide protection but detects and measures radiation that you have been exposed to. The badge will detect high-energy beta, gamma or x-ray radiation.
How often should badges for radiation exposure be monitored?
Badges are exchanged during the 1st week of each month. Badges must be received by the Radiation Safety Office by the 2nd Friday of the month. This is important so badges can be processed, and your exposure evaluated.
Are dosimeters mandatory?
Dosimeters are required to be issued if an individual is likely to receive greater than 10 percent of maximum permissible dose. Types of dosimeters: Whole body dosimeters are issued to monitor radiation exposure to the head and torso. Ring dosimeters are issued to monitor radiation exposure to the hands.
How is ede2 calculated?
Landauer EDE 2 is an estimated whole body dose calculated by multiplying the collar badge reading (outside the apron) by 0.3.
What are the two types of personal dosimetry?
There are two kinds of dosimeters:
- Passive Dosimeters. Commonly used passive dosimeters are the Thermo Luminescent Dosimeter (TLD) and the film badge.
- Active Dosimeters. To get a real time value of your exposure you can instead use an active dosimeter, typically an electronic personal dosimeter (EPD).
How much background radiation are we exposed to?
On average, a U.S. resident receives an annual radiation exposure from natural sources of about 310 millirem (3.1 millisieverts or mSv). Radon and thoron gases account for two-thirds of this exposure. Cosmic, terrestrial, and internal radiation account for the rest.
