What does a VDR record?
What does a VDR record?
The primary purpose of a voyage data recorder (VDR) or a simplified voyage data recorder (S-VDR) is to maintain a store of information, in a secure and retrievable form, concerning the position, movement, physical status, command and control of a vessel over the period leading up to and following an incident.
What data is recorded in VDR?
The VDR at least must record the following:
- Date and time (SVDR)
- Ship’s position (SVDR)
- Speed and heading (SVDR)
- Bridge audio (SVDR)
- Communication audio (radio) (SVDR)
- Radar data (SVDR)
- ECDIS data (SVDR)
- Echo sounder.
What is the use of VDR and recording time?
Although the primary purpose of the VDR is for accident investigation after the fact, there can be other uses of recorded data for preventive maintenance, performance efficiency monitoring, heavy weather damage analysis, accident avoidance and training purposes to improve safety and reduce running costs.
How does VDR work in time of accident?
The VDR is contained within a tamper-proof protective storage unit that is reinforced to withstand extreme impact, pressure, heat and other conditions that could be encountered during a maritime accident. Some of the data a VDR collects includes: Position, date, time using GPS. Ship’s Heading.
How long does a VDR store data?
The length of time a VDR must log has changed, so ships must store all data items for up to 30 days on a long-term recorder and at least 48 hours of data on both the fixed and free-floating recorders.
When should you save VDR data?
Saving of data should be a part of the emergency response procedures and emergency drills. Class often requires 24 hours and many manufacturers provide a longer period, after which time the information will be overwritten.
Under what condition is VDR used?
A VDR Capsule is capable of withstanding heavy weather, collisions, fires, and pressure conditions even when a ship is at a depth of several meters in water.
How many hours is the minimum requirement for VDR voice recording system?
Please find below a summary of the new requirements for VDR: Data shall be recorded for minimum 48 hours in both capsules (opposed to 12 hours in the fixed capsule) and 30 days internally in the VDR. Bridge audio shall be recorded using at least two tracks for indoor microphones.
How does a VDR work?
Like the black boxes carried on aircraft, VDRs enable accident investigators to review procedures and instructions in the moments before an incident and help to identify the cause of any accident.
What does VDR stand for?

What CDR means?
Call Detail Record (CDR) is the detailed record of all the telephonic calls that pass through a telephone exchange or any other telecommunications equipment.
What is VDR and CDR?
Voltage Divider Rule (VDR) & Current Divider Rule (CDR) Equations & Formulas. Voltage division and current division are useful techniques which are used to express the voltage and current across one of the several series or parallel resistors in terms of the voltage and current across the combination respectively.
