Can you ice dye on silk?

Many customers have asked if you can do Ice Dyeing with silk just like with cellulose fibers such as cotton or rayon. The short answer is yes!

Can you dye silk in cold water?

Place 4 oz (113 g) of silk in a large basin filled with cool water for 1 hour. Fill a large container with cool water until it’s at least two-thirds of the way full. Before dyeing your silk, let it soak for at least an hour.

How do you do the ice dye method?

Place ice cubes on the area to which you’d like to add dye, then sprinkle on dye powder and wait for the ice to melt, filling the space with dye. Conversely, if any of the dye spots look too intense, you can place ice cubes on top of those spots and let them melt to help mute the too-saturated dye spots.

How long does ice dyeing take?

Put the tub in a safe place where it won’t be disturbed, and let it sit for 24 hours. (The ice may melt faster than this, but the dye needs to process for 24 hours for the brightest colors.)

What is the best dye for silk?

How do you set the dye in silk?

Silk Dyes must be fixed into the silk by steaming (not just a steam iron) or with a liquid fixative depending on the make. If you use the latter then follow the instructions on the bottle. Silk Paints are fixed using a hot iron. This is the easiest method of fixing and is used for silk paints.
