How do you train your breath to support your singing voice?

Learn to Sing: Breathing

  1. Breathe deeply from your lower lungs – imagine a rubber ring around your waist (your diaphragm)
  2. Breathe in and try to push the ring outwards.
  3. Breathe in through your nose and out through your nose and mouth.
  4. Avoid raising your shoulders as you breathe in – keep them relaxed and level.
  5. Relax!

How do I stop losing my breath when singing?

To breathe correctly to protect your singing voice, breathe from your diaphragm so your stomach, not your chest, rises when you inhale. Also, practice breathing in through both your nose and mouth at the same time when you’re singing, which will put less stress on your vocal cords.

How do singers hold their breath?

When a person “sings from their diaphragm,” they flatten it, which lets the individual breathe deeply and have tighter control over the release of air across the vocal cords. When the diaphragm flattens, it allows the lungs to maintain function. This additional air then provides “support” to the singing voice.

Why do I run out of breath when singing?

Singing without the chest voice quality usually results in a breathy, weak sound because of the lack of vocal fold engagement. Moreover, when your folds aren’t resisting air properly, then you have to push out extra air to produce more sound. Thus a singer without enough chest voice often runs out of breath.
