Points stay on your license after a conviction in NY until 18 months have passed. Those points then become inactive points, which can stay visible on your driving record abstract for up to four years. Even when the points are no longer visible on your abstract, they will remain on your permanent record.

Does defensive driving take points off your license in NY?

Upon completion of our New York DMV-approved defensive driving course, the DMV will reduce your active driving record point total by up to four points. We submit your certificate of completion to the NYS DMV and they take care of reducing the points.
