Hardwiring is a common method of installation among dash cam users all over the world. A hardwire kit eliminates the need to have your dash camera plugged into your car’s 12v socket.
What does a hardwire kit do?
The hardwire kit is designed to safely power up your dashcam without draining your battery. It has an automatic shutoff capability that will sense when it may be draining your car’s battery and it will power down the dascham, so you never have to worry.
Do dash cams need wired in?
While you might see dash cams that claim to be totally wireless, you’ll generally find that most dash cams currently on the market do require some sort of wiring to draw power. There are a few dash cams that run entirely on internal batteries but these are usually only able to record for a few minutes.
Can I use USB port for dash cam?
Unfortunately, this is not something we would recommend as the USB power source in some vehicles can only provide upwards of ~500mA to ~550mA worth of current, which is not enough to power a dash cam where it requires at least 12V from a cigarette lighter adapter.
Does hardwiring dash cam void warranty?

Is it worth hardwiring a dash cam?
It connects to the dash cam and helps regulate power to avoid battery drainage. Having a hardwire kit is a must if you decide to use the parking mode feature on your dash cam. Please note, not all dash cams have the parking mode feature, and therefore a hardwire kit is not necessary.

Also bear in mind that the cameras on most smartphones won’t be able to capture as much in a frame as a dash cam, plus they use a lot of power, and could even make the phone overheat and shut down. Since our last test two years ago there has been a shake-up among the apps, with many we rated no longer available.
