Are host families paid? No, host families are not paid. However, you will be entitled to a tax deduction each month that an AFS student stays in your home.

AFS-USA recommends you bring USD 2,500 for personal expenses for the year program or USD 1,250 for the semester program. These funds should cover your personal expenses such as toiletries, movies, social outings, gifts, and your school yearbook. You should not expect your host family to pay for these expenses.

Full program fee is non-refundable. In circumstances when the deposit is refundable, program fee payments are also refundable. If you receive a scholarship that covers any portion of your program fee after having already paid it, AFS will issue a refund accordingly.
