Why is it called Jackson-Pratt drain?
The Jackson-Pratt Drain (informally referred to as the “brain drain”) was named after its inventors Drs. Fredrick E. Jackson (Chief, Department of Neurosurgical Surgery, Naval Hospital, Camp Pendleton, CA) and Richard A. Pratt (Naval Hospital, Camp Pendleton, CA).
What means JP drain?
Definition. A Jackson-Pratt drain (or JP drain) is rubber tubing that may be placed after surgery. It may also be used with infections or injury that can cause a build up of fluid.
When is a JP drain used?
JP drains are often placed in wounds during surgery to prevent the collection of fluid underneath the incision site. This is a closed, air-tight drainage system which operates by self-suction. The drain(s) promote healing by keeping excess pressure off the incision and decreasing the risk of infection.
Is a JP drain a surgical wound?
All ostomies (including those with drains) are excluded as surgical wounds. A surgical procedure that creates a wound that is not an “ostomy”, and that has a drain (for example a Pleurx catheter, a Jackson- Pratt, etc.) would be considered a surgical wound.
Can you shower with a JP drain?

The Jackson-Pratt drain is usually removed when the drainage is 30 mL or less over 24 hours. You’ll write down the amount of drainage you have in the drainage log at the end of this resource. It’s important to bring your log to your follow-up appointments.
Does removing JP drain hurt?
– Is drain removal painful? Patients may experience a pulling or pressure sensation, however there is generally no pain experienced during drain removal. Drain removal takes only a few seconds. The stitch securing the drain in place is first removed followed by gentle removal of the drainage tube.
