Who is Meade County named after?
Fort Meade was named by army authorities for Gen. George C. Meade, a union commander at the civil war battle of Gettysburg. Today, Meade County covers more than two million acres, but when it was created in 1889 it included only the southern area of the county.

Why do they call it Rapid City?
Rapid City, named for the limestone spring stream that passes through the city, was founded in 1876 by a group of disheartened prospectors that had come to the Black Hills in search of gold. John Brennan and Samuel Scott, along with a small party of men, laid out the site of the present-day Rapid City.
