How long does it take to thru-hike the Superior Hiking Trail?

Full thru-hikes generally take 2-4 weeks. Taking a “shake-down” trip of 1-2 nights will help you to determine your pace and give you a chance to field test your gear before setting off. We highly recommend a few day hikes or a short backpacking trip on the SHT before setting forth on a thru-hike.

Every hiker and trail is different, but on average, you can hike 8-15 miles a day [4]. Even the slowest hikers can cover a considerable distance if they have the time to spare. At a pace of 2 mph (slower than average), you can comfortably hike 10 miles in a day.

How do you get water on the Superior Hiking Trail?

In the northern sections of the trail the water sources were primarily beaver ponds and low streams. The sources got better as we hiked south and as we continued to get more rain. Our first day we had to filter water at a beaver pond. Michael filled up the pouches while trying to avoid the scum and leaches.
